Jennie Ferrera Tumino
September 12, 1914 - May 09, 2011
Jennie Ferrera Tumino
Jennie F. Tumino, 96, of Millbrook, NY, passed away peacefully, on Monday, May 9, 2011, surrounded by her loving family, at her daughter's home in Savannah, GA, where she has lived for the past year. Jennie was born on September 13, 1914, in Tarrytown, NY, the daughter of Salvatore and Salvatrice Puglisi Ferrera. On October 31, 1932, Jennie married the love of her life, Giuseppe Joseph Tumino. Her husband, who was a barber in Millbrook from 1942-1966, predeceased her on February 13, 1977.
Jennie was a wonderful loving mother to two children, five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She lived in Sleepy Hollow North Tarrytown, NY, until August, 1945, then moved to Millbrook with her husband and children, where they lived on Merritt Avenue until 1965. In 1965, they moved to Verbank, NY, where Jennie lived for thirty five years. In 2000, Jennie moved back to Millbrook to be closer to her family. Jennie spent a great deal of time with her youngest, adoring granddaughter, Elizabeth Socci, and her husband, Joseph, along with their two daughters, Mia and Lola, whom she adored. She was their special "Nonni".
Jennie also spent time in Savannah, GA, with her loving daughter, Gloria, and her husband, Dominic. Jennie enjoyed the warm weather and the active lifestyle of the south and especially enjoyed her daily outings with her devoted daughter.
As a young woman, Jennie, was employed in dress factories during World War II, and worked for Eastern Aircraft, a division of General Motors, making engine covers for the famous Navy TBM torpedo bombers. After the war, she enjoyed family life until 1952, when she began working for IBM, where she was an inspector and later a lab technician until her retirement in 1971. Jennie was a member of the Poughkeepsie Italian Center, St. Joseph's Women's Guild, Millbrook Senior Citizens, Union Vale Women's Auxiliary, as well as a volunteer at Sharon Hospital and Vassar Hospital.
Jennie was a highly-spirited woman, who was full of life and forever "young at heart". She was a great homemaker, who always enjoyed baking. She was known for her Italian "S" cookies and her famous cheese cake which were so delicious they were loved by everyone. She devoted her last years of her life to her great grandchildren, who gave her great pleasure and love and surely were the reason she lived such a long, wonderful life. The memories they created together will be cherished forever.
Along with her husband and parents, Jennie was predeceased by a sister, Mary Vasta, her husband, Charles, and a niece, Catherine Vasta Smith, all of Tarrytown. She is survived by a daughter, Gloria Molella, and son-in-law, Dominic, a son, John L. Tumino, and grandchildren, Joseph Molella, and his wife, Heather, Danielle Porter and her husband, Kilmer, Elizabeth Socci and her husband, Joseph, Gina Bellistri and her husband, Dan, and John J. Tumino, and his wife, Diane, and great grandchildren, Shelby Hinton and Amelia Molella, Jackson Porter, Mia and Lola Socci, Sophia and Joseph Bellistri and Shelby Dillman. She is also survived by her niece, Violet Dalton, of Texas, many dear friends and her faithful friend, Alice Lindner, Millbrook, NY. Special thanks to the wonderful caregivers who, like angels, watched over Jennie, especially Linda Cota, Jan Langston, Suzanna Castillo and Ethel Padgett, and a very special thank you to the nurses at Hospice of Savannah, especially Beth Conaway.
